A team of four House Parents and five Child Care Assistants is led by the Head of Care, Mrs. Carol Clews. They all take a keen interest in the boarder’s successes, achievements and school life.
The boarding students are encouraged to complete a Life Book about their journey whilst at Potterspury Lodge.
The school actively works to create situations where achievement is experienced outside of a formal classroom environment. There are many opportunities for pupils within the enrichment elements of the 24 hour curriculum.
The school has full regard to the five elements of “Every Child Matters”.
Many of our pupils find it almost impossible to empathise or to see a situation from another person’s point of view because they lack Theory of Mind. These pupils often do not see a need to take part in community life outside of school, so need to be encouraged to join in evening activities such as clubs, swimming and Techno-Kids at the local leisure centre.
Evening clubs are run by duty teachers, usually between 7.00pm and 8.00pm. Current activities on offer are: Technology, ICT, woodwork, various sports, pottery and art and games. All clubs offer opportunities to develop the skills needed to be able to socialize with other pupils and staff. In September 2009, we started our own Scout troop, catering for Cubs and Scouts. The Scout troop will have some activities based in the school grounds, and will join the wider local community Scouts for joint activities as appropriate, including camping.
Access to the local community offers wider opportunities to socialize. Regular use is made of the local leisure for swimming sessions, and also to use the gym there for Techno Kids. These sessions provide access to fitness machines such as cross trainers, exercise bikes, treadmills etc, with other young people from outside the school community. Some young people attend Army Cadets at Milton Keynes on one or two nights a week.
When required, medical appointments are arranged by the care staff for the boarders with Doctors, Dentists, Opticians, Nurses and other Specialist appointments according to the individual needs of the child.
All the Care Staff are fully qualified, or working towards professional qualifications, in line with the National Minimum Standards for Residential Special Schools.
